Weekend away in Zaragoza

Heading home from our yearly trip to visit dani, sylvia, nico and cloe in zaragoza. We have been visiting, and getting spoilt, by these friends for over 10 years, and now our kids are having as much of a great time there as we do. It is just so relaxing! No rush to do anything, no mad parties or planned activities. Our weekend away generally consists of eating and sleeping, with a trip into beautiful Zaragoza also on the menu, where we eat more delicious food! No wonder i am 2kilos heavier!! But it is oh so worth it. I also feel like my batteries are recharged.

Times have changed from our first trips..then it was all about going out and partying. 4 kids later and now we don’t go out at all. We go to bed early, and relax on the couch, stuffed, beforehand. Then again we are also up much earlier!

Nico is 7 now, and Cloe has just turned 4. The girls are both princesses, so sometimes the 2 of them in the one place leads to competition (Cloe “tu eres fea” (you are ugly), Alina “no estoy fea, tu estas castigado” (I am not ugly, you are punished)). Luca follows Cloe’s commands readily (for a while) and so there are no issues there. Alina has always fancied Nico, and this time was no different. She is very happy to sit on the couch beside nico watching tv. This time though there was more communication. Alina now speaks Spanish quite well and luca understands a fair amount of the basics! The kids loved the amount of toys (nico is a boy boy, so plenty of cars, cloe is a girl girl so lots of make up and dress up stuff…suited our two perfectly). They really had a great time. And it has been wonderful to watch their relationships develop each year.

So as we head back – full, relaxed, and happy – we look forward to our next visit, and to many more to come! Thanks guys!!

Weddings in Ireland in May

After the madness of Queensday in the Dam it was time to pack up again and head to Dublin for 9 days (1st to 10th May). Pepe (as in granddad De Somere) and Griet brought Alina to met us and then after lunch in the sun we jumped on a plane and landed in cold, wet Ireland. As usual the taxi man, my aunt and pretty much everyone else we met remarked on how the weather had been “glorious” and the rain had “only just started” – sure sure!

Next day was Julie, my first cousin, and Kieran’s wedding, they were getting married in New Inn and the reception was down the road. We discovered that poor Alina gets carsick if she spent more then 15 mins in the car – roads not the best around there – something else she takes after her dad in :-) Luckily it was only 13mins between the church and the reception. We also discovered Tim (well with my help) had left his suit in Kay’s. Alina looked fab in a dress her cousin Sinead bought her, so no one noticed tim really!

Luckily the rain stayed away long enough for some pics. The bride wore a classic dress that I just loved, she looked absolutely stunning. As did the bridesmaids. Kieran wasn’t looking to bad either :-) Alina refused to sleep, there was way too much happening, so eventually I brought her upstairs…..I passed out before she did. Tim took over at 11pm and I got to go downstairs and join in the dancing. Mum and dad were jiving – they looked great. Edel, Liz, john and I took on the new inns in a kind of dance off (thanks to Dave) – of course we won! Riverdance, rock the boat and some ceile later, I was exhausted and exhilarated going to bed! Great day had by all.

Sunday night we got to Ballyhard and just relaxed. It was cold and wet and so we had the perfect excuse for sitting inside in front of the fire and doing nothing (actually poor tim was working). I love our home, especially when you’re trapped inside. It is so welcoming and in fact fosters relaxation. We lazed, chatted, ate and drank for 3 days. Mum and dad also got to have some “Alina time” for themselves.

Then we were off to Dee and Steve’s wedding in Wicklow. This time we were going sans Alina who got to hang out with her grandparents until the aunties took over for night duty. Simon and Gill took us down with them. Also going to be there was steve and lorraine, dd and niamh, hugh and ruth, feeb and michael. We were all staying, so I was really looking forward to a night away with great friends …. Friends who mostly have kids and so we don’t get to catch up enough at all. The ceremony was outside and the sun shone just long enough to let that happen, dee looked beautiful and radiantly happy. The wedding was in an old house, so you got to wander between rooms chatting to different groups. Inevitably the girls ended up talking about birthing stories, while the boys drank at the bar! It was great to catch up, great to see FeeB bounce of some walls as she headed to bed, and mostly it was great to see Dee and Steve so happy.

Final stop was to Luxury Hotel Betson, where we got to hang out with friends, be served great food and drink red wine. And of course Mayah and Alina got to play and fight over toys :-) I love staying with Si and Gill, they make us feel so welcome, everything is so easy, and I always end up feeling recharged. On Sunday before we flew back to Barcelona, edel, kev and liz joined and we had food outside in the sunshine in Gill and Si’s – yes I admit the day was a beautiful one.

In between we also got to met Max William Fowler, the beautiful son of Claire and Martin. He is perfect.

So all in all a wonderful trip, relaxing and filled with quality time with friends and family – sure what more do you need!

grandparents

Fiona’s mum has decided she doesn’t want to be called ‘Granny’, as it makes her feel old. Instead she has declared previously that she wanted to be called Kate-Lila by her grandchildren. Today however she has decided she wants to be known as ‘Mama G’, no doubt inspired by the following movies, singers, and local heroes:

Our last trip before…

With the weeks ticking by there was less and less time that Fiona would be allowed to fly, so we had to go somewhere on our last trip with just the 2 of us, and to escape work and Barcelona; Menorca it was for a long weekend. The weather in Barcelona had been poor, and Menorca was threatening to be just as bad, but we got very lucky; out of the 5 days we were there, we only had 1 morning of rain; the rest of the time the weather was sunny, dry and warm!
The island is beautiful; full of little virgin beaches (with very few people sunbathing), lovely little towns, and everything reachable by car in less than an hour – it was great, relaxed, and just what we needed – apart form the food, according to fiona, who’d had something grander in mind than the no nonsense restaurants in ciutadella and mahon…
anyhoo, here are some pictures

My Christmas present from Fiona

another year, another great Christmas present: a trip to go skiing with Oscar and the gang. Fiona arranged it all with Marlies and Remco, and kept it a secret from Oscar, who got a nice surprise – i hope :)

We were in Oz en Oisans, just next to Alpe D’Huez; great snow, even though no new snow fell during the entire week we were there. There was about 17 of us in a massive chalet with sauna and jacuzzi – great fun had by all.

Istanbul

went to Istanbul for a few days in late January. the fact that we went in low season was a blessing – not many tourists – and a curse – Fiona and me being pretty much the only blond people in Istanbul made us a target for every type of scam. We hadn’t prepared for the fact that nearly every single person we dealt with would try and rip us off – but always with a smile.
The city however is amazing, majestically spread out round the bosphorus, with 2 of the most impressive churches/mosques i’ve ever seen, and innumerable treasures from the Roman and Ottoman periods, especially the Sultan’s Palace. They really were 3 days of wonder, shame we didn’t have more time to spread our wings a bit more and get ripped off in different places :)

Julie’s big day

On the way from Dublin to Ballyhard we went via Kilkenny for Julie’s Wedding. Kerry – she does not want to be mentioned by her real name – and Martinez were there as well, it was great catching up with them, introducing them to Spicy rum and ginger ale, and dancing the polka with Aunty Kitty!

Here are a few pics of the beautiful bride:
